A great road trip by car or bike. The Queen's View of Loch Tummel, with a delightfully conical mountain called Schiehallion in the background, is one of Britain's finest. The summit of Schiehallion itself offers another. At the western end of Loch Rannoch, a completely different landscape emerges, with Rannoch Station signalling the end of the road and the beginning of wild Rannoch Moor as it stretches for miles to the west ("A wearier looking desert man never saw" - Robert Louis Stevenson).
The essential journey here is, as we've already hinted rather strongly, the circuit of the two lochs, by car or bike. Less of an endurance challenge, more a test to see if you can you slow down enough to properly soak up the splendour of this place.
Schiehallion, a satisfyingly conical mountain and (geography nerd alert) birthplace of contour lines...
